Cushing (Richard) is born in South Boston.
August 24, 1895
The son of Irish immigrants, Richard Cushing is born at 806 East Third Street, grows up at 44 O Street, attends the Pope, Lincoln, Perry Schools, and South Boston High School, and graduates from Boston College High School, Boston College and St. John’s Seminary. Just before he is ordained at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross on May 26, 1921, Cushing is told by Mons. John Peterson, “Take your priesthood seriously, but never yourself.” Cushing takes the advice to heart and becomes a beloved figure in Boston. He is named a bishop in 1939,* a cardinal in 1958,* and serves as Archbishop of Boston (1944-70). Cushing dies in Boston on November 2, 1970, and is buried in the chapel of St. Coletta’s School in Hanover on November 7, 1970.*
